Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) work alongside people with disability every day. They provide valuable support for people to be included in society and fully participate at home, school, work, and in the community.
Their work depends on an understanding of human rights. DSPs are essential advocates and partners with people with disability to prevent exclusion and discrimination, and encourage and support people to make decisions, participate in the community, and control their own lives.
DSPs are part of the global advocacy movement, working alongside people with disability as they advocate for inclusion and respect.
Listen Include Respect is a set of global guidelines developed by Inclusion International and Down Syndrome International, with support from self-advocate leaders around the world. These guidelines are designed to help organizations in all sectors to ensure their work is inclusive so people with intellectual disability can fully participate.
What does it mean to provide good support for people? Good support is almost undetectable. It looks like everyday life. Although we see everyone within our organization as contributors to support, it is Direct Support Professionals who have the most direct impact in the lives of the people who choose services from Keystone Human Services. Our goal is to strengthen knowledge about human rights, so that Direct Support Professionals see themselves not as caregivers, but as advocates and partners with the people they’re supporting.
